How We Review Board Games

Every TopVett review follows the same rigorous methodology. Here's exactly how I research, compare, and choose my recommendations.

Step 1: Research & Data Collection

I start by identifying what board gamers are actually searching for and buying. I analyze trending games, new releases, and perennial favorites across multiple data sources. For each review, I examine:

  • Hundreds of verified buyer reviews on Amazon
  • Player ratings and reviews on BoardGameGeek
  • Price history and value analysis
  • Publisher track record and game quality

Step 2: Side-by-Side Comparison

I compare games within each category on the specs that actually matter:

  • Player count range — Does it work well at 2? At 6?
  • Play time — Quick filler or all-day affair?
  • Complexity/weight — Gateway-friendly or gamer's game?
  • Replayability — Will it hold up after 20+ plays?
  • Component quality — Flimsy cardboard or premium materials?
  • Price per play — How much value do you get for your money?

Step 3: AI-Assisted Analysis

I use AI to process more data than any single reviewer could. The AI helps me:

  • Identify patterns across thousands of player reviews
  • Spot common complaints and dealbreakers
  • Compare specifications across dozens of competing games
  • Generate comprehensive, structured comparisons

The AI is a research tool — it amplifies my methodology, it doesn't replace it. Every recommendation reflects a systematic process, not random generation.

Step 4: Honest Recommendations

I don't recommend everything I review. If a game isn't worth your money, I say so — even if it would earn me an affiliate commission. My recommendations include:

  • Clear "best for" picks (best overall, best budget, best for 2 players, etc.)
  • Honest assessment of downsides and limitations
  • Who the game is and isn't for
  • Direct Amazon links for easy purchasing

Transparency

TopVett earns money through the Amazon Associates Program. When you buy a game through my links, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never influences my recommendations — I recommend the same games regardless of commission rates.
